If you moved to Evergreen this year and mostly saw the place through Rodeo Weekend and the Lake House concerts, September is going to reshape your mental map. The summer marquee events happen all over town. The fall ones don't.
For three consecutive Saturdays, one field at the corner of Highway 74 and Squaw Pass Road runs the town's civic calendar. Chili on the twelfth, Oktoberfest on the nineteenth, art on the last weekend. It's the same grass, three different jobs, and once you notice the pattern you can plan your whole month around it.
Why Buchanan Park is really a fire-department engine
The Big Chili Cook-Off looks like a food festival. It isn't. The event honors mountain-community first responders, features live entertainment, kids' activities, vendors, and the annual Firefighters Challenge, and event proceeds benefit the local mountain fire departments from Elk Creek, Evergreen, Indian Hills, Inter Canyon, North Fork and Platte Canyon. Six districts, one Saturday, one park.
That matters if you own here. The volunteer fire agencies whose booths you'll be sampling from on September 12 are the same ones that respond when a lightning strike puts smoke over Bergen Peak. Coordinator Lora Knowlton has attributed part of past turnouts to community gratitude for firefighters' response to the Quarry Fire, which started in Conifer-based Inter-Canyon Fire's district and involved the efforts of multiple foothills fire agencies. Chili tickets are, in effect, the most social property-insurance premium you'll pay all year.
The month at a glance
Here's how the three Saturdays line up, plus the Tuesday counter-beat most newcomers miss:
- Tuesdays, September 1, 8, 15, 22 — Growing Out West Farmers Market at Cactus Jacks, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Saturday, September 12 — Big Chili Cook-Off, Buchanan Park
- Saturday, September 19 — Evergreen Oktoberfest, Buchanan Park, 12 to 4 p.m.
- Saturday and Sunday, September 26–27 — 7th Annual Elk & Art Festival, Evergreen North Shopping Center
Notice the venue shift on the last weekend. That's not random, and it changes how you should approach the day.
September 12: the chili math
The Big Chili has a pricing quirk that catches new residents every year. Advance admission is $18 per person for 1, 2, or 3 tickets and $15 per person for 4 or more tickets, kids 12 and under are free, and after September 6 tickets can be purchased at the front gate for $20 per person. If you're bringing three kids and two adults, buying in advance saves you more than the chili is technically worth.

There's a fulfillment wrinkle too. Tickets purchased prior to Friday, August 15 will be mailed to the address on the order form; tickets purchased August 16 through September 10 can be picked up at Will Call at the main gate; after Wednesday, September 10, 2026, you must purchase tickets at the gate. If you're the type who buys three days out, you're paying gate price whether you meant to or not.
Scale matters when you're deciding whether to walk down or drive. The Big Chili Cook-Off typically draws a large family audience of over 3,000 attendees each year, and the one-day event features artisan and business vendors, a great selection of chili to taste and sample, and entertainment. Three thousand people into a park with limited on-site parking means you're either arriving before ten or riding the shuttle. Big Chili offers a free bus shuttle from Evergreen Middle School at 2059 Hiwan Drive and Bergen Valley Elementary at 1422 Sugarbush Drive to the event, and shuttles run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
One last local texture to know before you go: kids can participate in the Kids Firefighter Challenge in the front parking lot from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., they get to try on a mini-firefighter jacket and hat and get their hand at the hose with assistance from a volunteer, and all participants receive a special recognition ribbon. That's a genuinely lovely 75 minutes if you have a five-year-old.
September 19: the same grass, a very different Saturday
A week later Buchanan Park changes character completely. Evergreen's Oktoberfest features German beer, food, and activities for kids, with live music by Polka Folka and Judge Roughneck, hosted by Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice, supporting Camp Comfort, and the event runs at Buchanan Park Field from noon to 4 p.m.
Four hours, one afternoon, a much smaller footprint than Big Chili. The interesting name in that lineup is Judge Roughneck, a long-running Denver ska band whose presence on a Buchanan Park stage should tell you the "Oktoberfest" label is being interpreted loosely. If you were expecting strict Bavarian, adjust.
The beneficiary is also worth knowing about. Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice is the nonprofit hospice provider that serves the mountain area, and Camp Comfort is their bereavement camp for children. It's a different kind of fundraising Saturday than Big Chili, held in the same field, seven days apart.
If you've only got one Buchanan Saturday in you this September, the practical rule is simple: bring the family on the 12th, bring the neighbors on the 19th. Different scale, different beneficiary, different tolerance for crowds.
September 26–27: the venue shift to Evergreen North
The last September weekend leaves Buchanan behind. ColoradoArtWeekend.com is continuing the 7th Annual Evergreen Elk & Art Festival on September 26 and 27, and in the historic Colorado foothill community of Evergreen this fall-oriented fine art and fine craft festival is described by the organizer as energetic, comfortable, unpretentious, welcoming, and engaging.
The venue tells you what to expect. The location is the Evergreen North parking lot, which looks directly over Evergreen Parkway (CO 74), the main thoroughfare serving Evergreen, and the borrowed address for mapping purposes is 3719 Evergreen Pkwy, Evergreen, CO 80439. This is a "block off the streets" arts show sitting on asphalt at a shopping center, not a park festival. That means easier parking, faster in-and-out, and a very different browsing pace than Big Chili's grass-under-tents feel.
Scale is smaller and juried. ColoradoArtShows.com presents the annual Evergreen Elk & Art Festival in the historic foothills community of Evergreen, Colorado, and the juried fine art and fine craft show features a curated selection of up to 65 artists. Sixty-five booths is a comfortable Saturday morning, not a full-day commitment. Save the afternoon for a drive up Squaw Pass while the aspens are turning.
The Tuesday counter-beat at Cactus Jacks
Weekends get all the attention, but there's a weekday rhythm running underneath. Growing Out West is Evergreen's newest farmers market, and the market runs Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cactus Jacks, with fresh produce, soap vendors, and more. September 1, 8, 15, and 22 are the dates on the calendar this year.
If you work from home in Evergreen and your calendar is your own, Tuesday mornings at Cactus Jacks are how you meet growers and neighbors without the Saturday tourist wash. It's also where you'll figure out which local vendors will show up again at Big Chili as artisan booths the following weekend.
The details that make or break the day
A short list of practical things residents learn the hard way:
- Park at the schools, not the park. Buchanan's own lots fill fast on event Saturdays. The free shuttle from Evergreen Middle School and Bergen Valley Elementary is faster than circling.
- The August 15 mail cutoff is real. After that, you're picking up at Will Call. After September 10, you're paying gate price. Set a calendar reminder in early August.
- Weather is variable. Colorado weather can change quickly, and vendors are advised to come prepared for sunshine but throw in rain covers and tie downs just in case an unexpected storm rolls through. That advice is aimed at exhibitors, but the layer-and-hat logic applies to attendees too.
- The Firefighters Challenge is worth timing. The annual firefighter challenge is a timed event in which firefighters maneuver an obstacle course in full gear, and hot temperatures add to the challenge for firefighters wearing heavy bunker gear, helmets, oxygen tanks and masks. Ask a volunteer when your district's team is running.
- Re-entry is allowed at Big Chili. Re-entry is allowed, and attendees should be sure to receive a hand stamp when they leave. Handy if you want to break for a nap and come back for the afternoon music.
Why this matters if you live here
The three Buchanan Saturdays are the clearest civic signal in the Evergreen calendar. One raises money for the six fire districts that cover your roof. One raises money for the hospice that serves the mountain corridor. One puts sixty-five working artists inside a shopping-center parking lot with the highway as their backdrop. Show up to any of them and you'll leave with a better sense of who actually runs this town than you'd get from a year of scrolling neighborhood forums.
